About Amplifiedradio

The Quiet Failure

Amplifiedradio works on garage doors across Long Beach, with a particular focus on cables and drums. We are on Willow St in the 90806 ZIP.

Springs get the attention because a spring failure is loud and unmistakable. Cables are the part that fails without announcing itself, and in a coastal city they fail sooner than most people expect.

Why Cables Are Different

A lift cable is stranded steel. Salt gets between the strands and corrosion begins on the inside, where nothing can be seen from a distance. The outer surface can look perfectly serviceable while the core is failing.

That is why we say a glance from the doorway is not an inspection. Looking properly means examining where the cable winds onto the drum, and along its length, for rust weeping out from between the strands and for any strand standing proud of its neighbours.

What Happens When One Goes

The door stops being lifted on that side. It rises crooked, binds hard in the track, and can bend track or twist a panel within a couple of attempts.

Which is why the advice, if your door is hanging at an angle, is always the same: stop using it and call. The repair at that point is usually modest. After twenty more attempts it may not be.

The Line We Hold

Cables attach to the bottom brackets, which are under full spring tension. We will talk any homeowner through replacing rollers or a bottom seal happily. We will not talk anyone through a cable, because that is where the serious DIY injuries happen.
