Garage Door Cables Fail From the Inside, and Near the Coast They Fail Early

Springs get the attention. Cables are the part that gives no warning, and in this city they are on a shorter clock than most people realise.
What a Lift Cable Does
Two cables carry your garage door. Each runs from a bracket at the bottom corner up to a grooved drum on the torsion shaft above the opening. As the springs unwind and the shaft turns, the cables wind onto the drums and the door rises.
The springs counterbalance the weight. The cables transmit it. Both are essential and only one of them announces its own failure.
The Corrosion Nobody Sees
A lift cable is stranded steel wire, several strands twisted together. That construction gives it flexibility, and it creates gaps.
In Long Beach, salt carried in the marine layer settles on everything overnight. It works into the gaps between the strands and corrosion starts on the inside of the cable, where no amount of looking at it from the doorway will find it.
This is the important part: the outside of the cable can look entirely serviceable while the core is going. The usual advice to look for visible wear assumes corrosion works from the surface inward. Here it often does not.
What to Actually Look For
Get close, with a torch, and look at where the cable winds onto the drum, because that is where load and flexing concentrate.
Rust weeping out from between strands. Orange staining bleeding from inside the twist. This is the clearest early sign in a coastal garage and it means corrosion is already established internally.
A strand standing proud. If one strand has lifted away from its neighbours, the cable is unwinding. That is late-stage.
Flattening. A section that has lost its round profile where it has been sitting on the drum.
Visible fraying. Obvious, and by this point the cable should have been replaced already.
Slackness on one side with the door down, which usually means a cable has jumped its drum groove.
When One Parts
The failure is not subtle and it is fast.
One side stops being lifted. The other keeps going. The door rises at an angle, binds in the track, and jams hard, usually within a foot or two of travel.
At that moment the damage is a cable. Within a few more attempts to make it work it can be bent track, and after that a twisted or creased panel. That is how a modest repair turns into a section replacement, and if the door model has been discontinued, into a whole door.
So if your door is hanging crooked: stop. Pull the manual release so the opener cannot drive it, leave the door where it is, and call. That advice is free and it is worth more than anything else on this page.
Why Both Cables Get Replaced
Two reasons, one obvious and one not.
The obvious one: they are the same age, in the same air, carrying the same load. If one has failed the other is not far behind, and paying twice for the same visit is poor value.
The less obvious one: cables stretch slightly over their working life. Fit a new cable on one side and leave a stretched one on the other, and the door lifts unevenly from that day on. It drags in the track and wears the rollers, and it is the sort of low-grade wrongness that quietly shortens the life of everything else.
Drum Timing, the Detail Nobody Mentions
The drums have to be set so both cables wind in step with each other.
If they are out of time, the door lifts with a permanent twist. It is subtle enough that most owners never identify it as a fault, and it puts continuous uneven load into the track and rollers.
Setting them correctly is part of a proper cable job. It is worth asking about, because it is a step that can be skipped invisibly.
The One We Will Not Talk You Through
We are generally happy to explain how to do things yourself. Replace a bottom seal, fit nylon rollers to the middle sections, test the safety reversals, clear the opener memory. All fine.
Cables are the exception, and firmly so.
The cable anchors to a bottom bracket that is under the full tension of the spring system whenever the door is down. Unbolting one with the springs wound releases that energy through the bracket, the cable and whatever is holding them. This is where the serious garage door injuries come from, and the money saved does not come close to justifying it.
How Often to Have Them Checked
Within a mile or two of the water: yearly. Salt is doing continuous damage inside the strands and the visible warning arrives late.
Further inland: every couple of years, or whenever the springs are being worked on, since the tension is already off and the marginal cost is small.
Always in the same visit as spring replacement. The tension has to come off either way. Doing both at once means one visit, one labour charge, and a door where the two most safety-critical components are both known-good.

Small Habits That Buy Years
Two things genuinely slow this down, and neither costs anything.
Rinse the door occasionally. Fresh water over the door and the lower hardware, particularly after a stretch of still, damp weather, removes the salt film before it has time to work into anything. It is the same reasoning people apply to a car and almost nobody applies to a garage.
Keep the bottom seal seated. A worn or lifted seal lets water sit along the base of the door rather than running off. That water reaches the bottom brackets and the lower ends of the cables, which is exactly where you least want standing salt water.
Neither is a substitute for having the cables looked at. Both push the timeline out.
While Someone Is Already There
If you are booking any work involving spring tension, ask for the cables to be inspected in the same visit.
The tension has to come off for spring work anyway, so the cables become fully accessible at no extra labour. Having them replaced at that point costs the parts and very little else, whereas a separate cable visit later costs a full call out.
